Malcata Animal Association was founded in August 2019 by Jo Bruce, a woman whose love for animals and people was simply extraordinary. For years, she had been rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals largely on her own, supported by her family and driven by nothing more than an immensely kind heart and an unshakeable belief that every creature deserves a second chance.

Tragically, just three weeks after the association became official, we lost Jo unexpectedly in September 2019. Her passing left a void that words cannot fill, but it also left behind a legacy too important to let go of.

Her husband Gordon stepped up. He kept Jo's dream alive through the grief, supported by an incredible community in and around Penamacor and a wave of volunteers and donors whose generosity was nothing short of overwhelming. What could have ended before it truly began, survived and grew!

For six years, Gordon has carried this forward with dedication and heart.

Now, a new chapter begins. Marja, René, and their children Abigail and Oliver are taking over the day-to-day running of Malcata Animal Association, a family who share Jo's belief that animals and people deserve care, community, and a place to belong. Gordon remains closely involved, ensuring that everything Jo started continues in the spirit she intended.

The mission stays the same: rescue, rehabilitate, rehome, and never stop caring.
